Can travel “change your life?” How many experiences have such an enormous impact? I can name several that shifted my perspective, or expanded how I view the world and other people. Exploring the surreal landscapes of Iceland and Patagonia. Walking among Earth’s highest mountains in Nepal, through remote villages where people live much as their ancestors did for centuries. Immersing myself in the mountain culture on hut treks in the Alps like the Tour du Mont Blanc (photo above). And seeing unforgettable places like Norway’s Jotunheimen National ParkItaly’s Dolomites, and Alaska’s Glacier Bay through the unclouded eyes of my kids. Continue reading →

I often get asked, “What’s your favorite trip?” And I can’t answer that one. To pick just one from all the amazing adventures I’ve had the good fortune to take feels like an impossible task. So instead, I’ve assembled the following list of my 10 all-time favorites (so far). It includes, among other five-star trips, backpacking the Teton Crest Trail and John Muir Trail; hiking across the Grand Canyon; and trekking in Iceland, Patagonia, and Italy’s Dolomite Mountains (lead photo, above). Check out this photo gallery of selected images from several of those trips, including hiking and backpacking from the Grand Canyon and Glacier national parks to the John Muir Trail and Patagonia (lead photo, above). Michael,

This is great and thanks for sharing. How difficult would you rate the “W” trek [in Chile’s Torres del Paine National Park] for a beginner? I will be going with five other friends and want to make sure I have enough time to finish it safely.

Also, what type of rain paints would suffice? Do you recommend something like Gore-Tex or a water-resistant pant? We plan to go in Jan/Feb.

Thanks.

Ask Me: Trekking Patagonia’s Dientes Circuit

Hi Michael,

I recently came across your website while looking for information on the Dientes Circuit. Thank you for putting together such a comprehensive summary of your trip. We are headed down that way for three weeks this winter and are planning to backpack the Paine Circuit while we’re there. We’re also looking at the Dientes Circuit and Fitzroy to fill our trip. Did you find a spot to leave gear in Punta Arenas? Is it possible to buy backpacking-type food in Puerto Williams or did you fly with it from Punta Arenas?

Thanks for your help,
Erik
