I had backpacked past the trail to Baptiste Lake just two summers earlier, and seeing its cirque from a distance, decided then that I had to return and visit it. So on the next-to-last day of a solo, six-day hike through the Wind River Range, much of it on the Continental Divide Trail, I took a side hike to Baptiste from my camp by Skull Lake. Baptiste is a relatively larger alpine lake in the Winds and its broad cirque contains several peaks—I think its scenery rivals the much better-known Cirque of the Towers. But few people make the substantial effort required to get there.
