I’ve known and heard from many very experienced backpackers for whom their first trip into the Wind River Range changed everything for them. They never looked at mountains the same way again.
The place has had that effect on me. After more trips into the Winds than I can immediately recall, I still think about returning every year; in fact, I have done exactly that in most of the past several years (and I backpack all over the place for a living!). I’ve met backpackers who’ve been through the Winds numerous times and hardly go anywhere else—and I can’t blame them.
There are many reasons for their appeal. The endless parade of soaring granite peaks rising to over 12,000 and 13,000 feet on the Continental Divide. The prospect for real solitude (once you’ve walked far enough from the few busiest areas and trailheads). And certainly, the world-class trout fishing.
But for many of us, it is the lakes. More that 1,300 of them, by one widely circulated estimate. Having hiked past and camped by (and photographed) a countless number of them over more than 30 years of exploring the Winds, I’m always astonished at the unique beauty of each one.
They also seem to attract exceptional sunsets and morning light—as you’ll see in the many photos for sale on this page.
